Better Food Stories: Square Roots Kitchen
This is episode three of the Better Food Stories interview series, which includes conversations with the entrepreneurs behind some of today’s newest and most innovative food brands.
Today’s busy lifestyles make it more difficult than ever to eat healthy. Even with all the conveniences out there, it still isn’t always easy to find a fresh, healthy and readymade meal that’s also fast and affordable — especially if you also have food allergies or are following a specific diet.
Square Roots Kitchen is a healthy, fast-casual restaurant located in Downtown Chicago. Its founder, Derin Alemli, faced the same challenge of finding on-the-go meals to fit his low carb lifestyle. And so Square Roots Kitchen was born.
Today, the restaurant offers a wide ranging menu of salads, wraps and bowls that are made with garden-fresh greens, high-quality protein and unprocessed fruits and veggies like avocado, tomato, corn and squash.
But what really makes Square Roots Kitchen such a unique dining concept is the technology that comes with it. Whether ordering through their app or one of their onsite ordering screens, SRK makes it fast and easy to customize any meal to fit your dietary needs. Simply choose your diet such as paleo, vegan, low-fat, high fat, gluten free or a range of others, and then select any allergies you might have — no dairy, no nuts, no spices, no worries. From there, SRK’s algorithm will customize any meal on their menu to fit your specific needs and ordering is still just as fast as ordering a fast food burger. And for added convenience Each menu item also shows the breakdown of fats, carbohydrates and proteins for every item on their menu.
In this interview, I chat with SRK founder Derin X to learn:
How he went from hedge fund manager to food entrepreneur
How SRK is combining food and technology in a truly unique way
How he and his team have created different recipes to suit so many different dietary needs
How he thinks technology is impacting the future of food
